Fly Williams Biography

Fly Williams is one of the most popular and richest Basketball Player who was born on February 18, 1953 in Brownsville, New York, United States. The Denver Nuggets drafted Williams in the first round (second overall) of the 1974 ABA Draft. After this draft there was a variety of bids to buy the contract of player Williams. In the end, his contract was transferred by The Spirits of St. Louis. (Bob Costas, at the time a sportscaster in his early years was the announcer for their games. Costas was later to contribute to the book “Loose Balls: The Short, Wild Life of the American Basketball Association,” the first sports book to be released in 1990 published by Simon & Schuster, and written by writer Terry Pluto.)

Williams scored 51 points twice in his freshman year. In his sophomore season, Williams averaged 27.5 points per game, earning a third-place scoring record in the NCAA. Once again the Governors basketball team won the bid for the NCAA tournament. Once again Williams scored 26 points, but Austin Peay was crushed by Notre Dame, 108–66, in the first round. The record established by Williams in his two years at Austin Peay, was impressive. Williams scored 1,541 points with a 28.5 point per game average; he left college due to hardship and pursued a professional career. Austin Peay responded to Williams’ two year record, in 1975, by building the Dunn Center, a larger gymnasium, to accommodate the increase in attendance at basketball games.

At age 64 in May, 2017, Williams was arrested in Brooklyn, NY, and charged with being the alleged leader of a large heroin distribution ring.

The basketball season of 1974-75 was a failure for Williams as well as his teammates. He scored only 9.4 scores per contest with the Spirits. Williams score was inconsistent and he was noted for his swagger rather than his score-making ability. Williams did not play in the following season (1975-76) in the following year, and it was announced that the Spirits of St. Louis were among two teams together with Kentucky Colonels, Kentucky Colonels, to fold in the wake of the ABA-NBA merger. Williams was left without an organization despite some interest in keeping Williams as a player in the league. Williams was later picked to Philadelphia 76ers Philadelphia 76ers in the ninth round (152nd overall) of the 1976 NBA Draft but the team did not choose to sign the player.

Williams was on campus in 1972. He arrived at the campus. He was welcomed by an open house that included a demonstration of writing in the sky that was able to spell his name. The year he was a freshman, playing as guard, his record of scoring was particularly impressive. Williams was averaging 29.4 score per contest in 1973. This was the fifth most in the nation. In 1973, the Austin Peay State University basketball team, known as the Governors were awarded a ticket into participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament. Williams kept his form scoring 26 points during an opening round win against Jacksonville University. The second day, Williams was able to score another 26 points, however his team, the Austin Peay Governors lost to the University of Kentucky, coached by Joe B. Hall during overtime.

While playing at Austin Peay, Williams’ nickname inspired a humorous fan chant: “The Fly is open, let’s go Peay!” Fans still chant “Let’s Go Peay” at all basketball games. Williams’ number 35 jersey was retired by Austin Peay State University on February 5, 2009.
